It won’t make up for the sting of falling to top-seeded Oregon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament late Sunday night, but Saint Joseph’s did very well when the Big 5 yearly honors were announced on Monday.
DeAndre’ Bembry, the Hawks’ star wing, was named the Big 5 Player of the Year and Saint Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli was tabbed as the storied Philadelphia group’s Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 28-8 season and Atlantic 10 Tournament title.
Bembry averaged 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game and was also named the A-10 Player of the Year. The junior from Charlotte poured in a season-best 30 points as the Hawks topped VCU for the conference tournament crown last week and scored another 23 – 20 in the first half – in St. Joe’s first-round win over Cincinnati on Friday.
Meanwhile, Isaiah Miles was also a first-team all-Big 5 pick and was named Philly’s most-improved college player. The senior upped his scoring average by more than seven points and led the Hawks with 18.1 ppg.
Villanova also had two members on the first team in Josh Hart and Ryan Arcidiacono, while Temple’s Quenton DeCosey rounded it out. Both teams, as well as the other accolades announced Monday, can be found below.
