After Tuesday’s 46-33 win over Faith Christian, Phil-Mont Christian coach Glenn Dolton was certainly pleased with the defensive effort his team showed.

“Defensively I thought we played very well,” he said. “I thought we were able to contain the lane which is something we’ve been talking about. We didn’t let them drive, we did a good job on the boards especially defensive rebounds. That was our main focus going into this game.”

Dolton’s team allowed only seven points in the first quarter and just six in the second. They forced eight turnovers and held Faith Christian to just 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) shooting in the first half of the Bicentennial Athletic League (Constitution Division) game.

The Falcons started slowly on offense, scoring only 10 points in the first quarter, but they picked up the pace and went into halftime up 23-13.

Noah Baldez had eight of his game-high 14 points in the first half and David Giuliani had all nine of his points over the course of the first two quarters as well.

Chris Clark scored 11 points to lead a Faith Christian team that was plagued by 17 turnovers.

The Falcons (13-1, 8-0 BAL) never really wavered in the second half, and the closest Faith Christian (10-4, 6-2) came to a comeback was when they cut the score to 35-25 with 4:42 left in the game.

Dolton was happy with the way his team played on defense but he made it clear that his team needs to make a more conscious effort when it comes to handling the ball.

“We have to continue to focus on not having teams get our turnovers and turn them into points and that’s been an issue and it happened again tonight,” Dolton said.

That seems to be the only thing going wrong for Dolton’s team these days. The Falcons have won 10 games in a row and their average margin of victory during that span is 17.4 points.

“Right now, I think that our focus is really good. We’ve got great chemistry. Guys are playing within their roles and their strengths. Noah [Baldez] has done a nice job of running the offense for us so I’ve been real excited about that but we’re getting nice balance in our scoring as well,” Dolton said.

Dolton’s analysis passes the eye test as the Falcons had four different players finish with at least nine points. The entire team seemed willing to pass up a good shot for a better shot and most of the time it generated any easy look for a Falcons player.

Phil-Mont will look to continue their winning ways when they take on Calvary Christian on Thursday.
