Despite starting fast, Delaware began its six-game road stretch with an 82-69 loss to Columbia at Levien Gymnasium in New York.

At first …
Delaware jumped out to a 26-17 lead with 9:45 remaining in the first half courtesy of a red-hot performance from junior guard Cazmon Hayes. Hayes scored 16 points to help the Hens to a double-digit lead before Columbia’s defense was able to make adjustments. The Lions would go on to hold the Blue Hens scoreless for over three minutes before sophomore point guard Kory Holden scored eight of Delaware’s final ten points to take a 38-32 halftime lead.

Turning point …
The Blue Hens faltered down the stretch against Columbia, as the Lions finished the game on an 8-0 run while Delaware shot just 2-of-11 to close the contest. The two teams were tied at 63 with 4:02 remaining before the Hens missed its next three shots to allow Columbia to spark a quick 7-0 spurt. The Lions, leading 70-63 with 2:16 remaining, did not allow the Blue Hens back into the game.

Shining stars …
With sophomore guard Chivarsky Corbett out for the year with a torn ACL, fellow guards Cazmon Hayes and Kory Holden once again stole the show. Hayes finished with a career-high 24 points on five 3-pointers and added five rebounds and three assists. Holden, meanwhile, matched a season-high 23 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor.

Four different Lions scored in double-figures for Columbia, as senior guard Maodo Lo scored a team-high 17 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Andrew Petrasek scored 16 points and five rebounds, while senior guard Grant Mullins and freshman forward Lukas Meisner each added 15 points, respectively.

Noteworthy numbers …
With both teams in a back-and-forth battle, it was Columbia’s 19-6 run, which began with 4:02 remaining, to end the game that made the difference. Columbia also won the turnover battle, forcing a 12-to-6 turnover margin to spark its second-half runs.

Up next …
Delaware (4-3) @ Marist (2-4) (Dec. 12th, 7 p.m.)
Columbia (5-5) @ Manhattan (1-5) (Dec. 9th, 7 p.m.)
