When Sam Green visited Drexel in June, he toured the campus, witnessed a workout, and met players and coaches.

Green, a 2016 combo forward from Bishop McNamara (Md.), still left Philadelphia hoping for something else that day. That came the following month when Drexel offered him a scholarship and a few weeks later, Green became the first verbal commitment of Drexel’s 2016 class.

“They showed a lot of interest early on, and even after they offered me a scholarship, they stayed on me,” Green said of Bruiser Flint and the Dragons’ coaching staff. “I have a good relationship with them, I feel like I can talk to them about anything, about basketball, they’re very open with me.”

The 6-foot-6 Green will bring a well-rounded offensive presence to Drexel next season. He described himself as a “stretch-4” that can also play the wing, and he averaged 7.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game playing with the DC Thunder in this summer’s Adidas Uprising summer championship.

An early bloomer in the height department, Green said he was always a big man in his early playing days, initially learning the game in the post. But Green got to expand his game as he got older and players around him got taller.

“Everyone caught up to my height, so that forced me to work on my outside game,” he said. “I can knock down the '3' now, I can pull up, I can dribble down the court if I have to.”

Some of the areas Green said he wants to work on before hitting the college level are ball handling and his athleticism, and he’ll have the chance to do so as one of the leaders of a Bishop McNamara team that went 18-11 a season ago.

Green originally had plans to visit Quinnipiac and Vermont, but cancelled them after he gave his word to the Dragons. That decision came after a talk with his family about his future.

“We had a big discussion,” Green said, “and we came to the conclusion that Drexel would be the perfect fit academically as well as athletically.”

Drexel has two remaining 2016 scholarships to build the rest of its recruiting class alongside Green.
