For the 27th year, the Billy Lake Basketball Marathon will bring together good hoops for a good cause on the Main Line, with a day of mostly high-school competition running this Saturday, Oct. 13, at Haverford College.

According to a press release, the event is the “longest-running family-run ALS event in the country,” run in memory of former Havertown resident Billy Lake, who passed away from ALS -- also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease -- in April 1992, at the young age of 42.

Most of the teams taking part are area high school programs, including Penncrest, Bonner-Prendergast, Springfield (Delco.) and a few Jersey squads, but there are also several other games taking part that involve various men, women, boys and girls from the area.

The event is free to attend, but donations are encouraged; all money raised will go towards the ALS Association’s research program and the Billy Lake Memorial Scholarship Fund at Bonner.
