The District 1 5A bracket was released on Sunday morning, with the 16-team field "unofficially" set. The brackets become official on Monday at noon after district officials double-check out-of-area records.
Seven of these teams will make the PIAA Class 5A tournament; all but one of the teams that advance to the quarterfinals will see their postseasons extended into March.
The top seed is the defending District champion, Penncrest, which is led by high-scoring senior Tyler Norwood, but the Lions’ supporting cast all knows their roles, from junior forwards Matt Arbogast and Malcolm Williams to senior guard Justin Heidig, senior forward Chris Mills and more.
At No. 2 is a district semifinalist from a year ago, Bishop Shanahan, and a Chester squad that’s won 15 of its last 16 games nabs the No. 3 seed. This is a wide-open bracket, though, with no fewer than seven or eight teams will real title hopes.
Here’s how it breaks down (regular-season record in parenthesis); click here for the 6A bracket:
1) Penncrest (20-2)
16) Springfield Delco (8-14)
8) Chichester (14-8)
9) Holy Ghost Prep (13-9)
4) Wissahickon (16-6)
13) Strath Haven (10-12)
5) Great Valley (16-6)
