The six-team Plymouth-Whitemarsh Spring League tips off this week at Colonial Elementary School, just behind the high school, with a six-team league playing an eight-game schedule before playoffs in late June.

All six programs are certainly amongst the best in their respective conferences: Archbishop Ryan, La Salle College HS, Lower Merion, Penn Wood and Plymouth-Whitemarsh.

A little on each team:

  • Last year, P-W went to the District 1 6A semifinals and PIAA Class 6A quarterfinals, and returns 7-foot 2019 center Naheem McLeod and rising senior twins Ahmad and Ahmin Williams, as well as Ish Horn and more.
  • Archbishop Ryan is fresh off its first state playoff appearance in school history, though head coach Joe Zeglinski has to replace prep-bound Division I prospect Izaiah Brockington as well as Matiss Kulackovskis (Bowling Green); he'll lean heavily on rising junior guards Jaquill Stone and Amin Bryant.
  • La Salle College HS has a talented trio of juniors ready to step into the spotlight for head coach Joe Dempsey: high-major target Zach Crisler (6-8), fellow D-I recruit Konrad Kiszka (6-5) and Allen Powell (5-11), who's two inches taller than he was at the end of last season and looks ready to be the lead guard in the offense the next two years.
  • Lower Merion head coach Gregg Downer's Aces will lean heavily on its class of 2019 for the last two season, with a full four rising juniors who played significant minutes as sophomores. Guards Stephen Payne and Jack Forrest lead the way, but Darryl Taylor and Theo Henry will step into much bigger roles as juniors.
  • Penn Wood ended the 2016-17 year strong, winning 11 of its final 12 regular-season games and then its first two in districts to earn a spot in the PIAA 6A playoffs, though that was a one-game appearance in a loss to Williamsport. Matt Lindeman will have to reload from a bunch that lost Kairi Jones, Pernell Ghee, Rashaad Anderson, Jay Fitzgerald, Javon Lindsay-Terrell and more.
  • Speaking of replacing seniors, Pennsbury has to move forward without a Division I recruit of its own, 6-8 Mark Flagg, who begins his career at St. Francis this fall. Flagg, 6-6 Billy Warren and 6-4 Joey Monaghan all graduated, so it'll be a new cast of Falcons head coach Bill Coleman turns to; look for 6-8 rising senior Chad Weldon plus classmates Josh Arruda and Raylil Winton to step up.
