Temple fell to conference-foe Tulsa by a score of 70-68 after a layup with two seconds left broke a deadlock and gave the Golden Hurricanes the victory.

At First…

After the first portion of the first frame was controlled mostly by Temple, back-to-back three pointers by Pat Birt swung the game in Tulsa’s favor, from down 22-21 to up 27-22, with just under eight minutes to play in the frame and the visiting Golden Hurricanes would take a 37-34 lead into the intermission. Highlighting the first half for Temple was the play of Daniel Dingle as the senior led the Owls with nine points and six rebounds at the break.

Turning Point…

It was all Temple out of the half as a three-pointer from Obi Enechionyia tied things up at 37 and sparked an 11-2 run for the Owls over the opening 3:02 of the second half which gave the Owls the lead early on in the second half. After Temple held the lead for the majority of the second half, Tulsa battled back from down eight to tie things up at 65 with 4:34 to go. A three pointer from Birt capped a late 9-0 Tulsa run and put the Golden Hurricanes ahead 68-65 before a three from Shizz Alston Jr. would knot things up at 68 with 2:24 to go. The score would stay tied at 68 until a Sterling Taplin layup with two seconds left gave Tulsa the victory.

Standout Stars…

Alston was a force for Temple in the second half as the sophomore guard scored 17 of his career-high 25 points in the second frame. The Haverford School graduate did his damage while shooting an efficient 10-of-20 from the field. Aiding his effort was the senior guard Dingle, who finished with 14 points and a team-high of eight rebounds.

For Tulsa, it redshirt junior Junior Etou who led the way as the 6-foot-8 forward finished with 15 points and nine rebounds while Birt, a senior, added in another 14 points.

Noteworthy Numbers…

15: The number of total ties and lead changes in this closely contested battle between the two conference foes. Tulsa held the lead four times, while the Owls held it three times of their own.

3: Temple scored three points in the final 6:03 of the game, a span in which saw Tulsa score 11 points and ultimately come out victorious.
