Drexel had a nine-point lead against Northeastern with 12 minutes to play but couldn’t hold on, allowing the Huskies to come back for a 75-70 win in overtime of a Colonial Athletic Association conference matchup at the DAC.

At First…

After an early three-minute stretch that featured Drexel missing nine of its 10 shots, the Huskies opened up the half’s biggest lead, 22-12, with five minutes to play until halftime. The Dragons quickly erased that lead, going on a 14-3 run to end the half, taking a 26-25 lead into the break.

After Drexel opened up a 47-38 lead midway through the second half, Northeastern fought its way back to hold a 58-57 advantage entering the game’s final two minutes. A couple of clutch shots by Kurk Lee put the Dragons back up by three, but that lead was quickly erased by a Bolden Brace three-pointer.

Drexel then committed a shot clock violation on the ensuing possession, giving the Huskies possession with two seconds to play, but they couldn’t capitalize and regulation ended with a 61-61 deadlock.

Turning Point…

In the extra period, Northeastern scored the first five points and eventually opened up 69-63 advantage on a Devon Begley three, but the Dragons weren’t yet silenced. A quick 5-0 run brought Drexel right back into the game, but after a key offensive rebound that led to an Alex Murphy jam, Northeastern held a three-point advantage entering the last 30 seconds of overtime.

Drexel failed to capitalize on its final possession as Miles Overton’s layup bounced off the back iron, and the Huskies were able to hold on for the overtime victory.

Standout Stars…

Northeastern’s T.J. Williams, the league’s leading scorer (21.1 ppg) heading into play Monday night, surpassed his season average with a game-high 24 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Alex Murphy, the 6-9 stretch-forward and former Florida transfer, had 20 points and nine rebounds while making three triples.

Drexel’s own Williams star, Rodney Williams, surpassed the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season, going for a team-high 20 points while just missing out on his third double-double with nine rebounds. Miles Overton added 13 for his third double-digit outing in a row and seventh of the season, all coming since Nov. 27.

Noteworthy Number(s)...

17: Number of minutes for Drexel point guard Major Canady, his most in any game since his freshman season in 2013-14. Canady, who missed the last two seasons with ankle and knee injuries, was appearing in his third game of the season after playing 12 minutes against D-III Kean and two against James Madison in the last few weeks.
