The end of high school basketball season doesn’t mean players in Philly have no games to play in the next few weeks. The annual Donofrio Classic tipped off Monday in Conshocken, and CoBL saw Tuesday night’s action at the Fellowship House.

Here’s a report from the pair of Tuesday night games:

Game 1: Competitive Edge 112, Waterview Dan Rumph 89

This game was not particularly close after the first 10 minutes of play. Competitive Edge, led by Upper Merion 2017 F Matt Faw’s 31 points, hit a barrage of 3-pointers and used its size against a shorter Waterview squad to its advantage. Justin Jaworski (2017/Perkiomen Valley) hit a team-best five treys and finished with 23. Competitive Edge had six players score in double figures – including 18 from Avery Close (2017/Phoenixville) – and the team will face Team Philly next Wednesday in the second round. For Waterview, Bernard Lightsey (2018/Imhotep) rode a hot shooting hand to 31 points, while Quincy Reed (2016/Father Judge) added another 20 points.

Game 2: Just Clean It 106, Philly Heat 69

Dhamir Crosby-Roundtree (2017/Neumann-Goretti) scored 18 points – a few of them coming on the receiving ends of alley oops – as Just Clean It easily advanced. Just Clean It jumped out to a 25-4 lead and led comfortably the entire way. The team had six players score in double figures, including Chuckie Champion (2016/Friends’ Central) and Austin Gilbertson (2017/Trinity), who both notched 16 points. Just Clean It will face either Positive Image 11 or Del Val Toros in the next round. For Philly Heat, Austin Thomas (2017/CR South) and Luke Olshevski (2017/Robbinsville) evenly split 24 points, and Mike McFadden (2017/Holy Ghost) added 10.

Antoms, Reed both considering prep year
Seniors Miks Antoms (Archbishop Carroll) and Quincy Reed (Father Judge) were two seniors who played on Tuesday night, and both are considering a year at a prep school before making the jump to collegiate basketball.

And they each have a unique set of circumstances.

Antoms has a lot to offer a college program with a 6-foot-9 frame and a year of conditioning in American basketball after coming over this season from Latvia. Antoms wants to play for a college in the United States, he’s just not sure if that will happen next season or if he will wait a year.

He noted he was visiting Division II West Chester in the coming weeks, but also knows prep school is a possibility to get more used to the American game, and to see if Division I offers start coming after he can continue to refine his skillset.

Antoms will be playing with an AAU team comprised of all foreign prospects sometime in the spring, many of whom hail from Lithuania. He hopes to keep showing improvement in his game, which only got better as Carroll’s season progressed. Antoms averaged 5.4 points for the Patriots this season, but went through a four-game stretch toward the end of the season when that number was 8.8.

“I feel like I played my best in our last five to seven games,” he said. “I definitely improved and want to keep improving.”

For Reed, on the other hand, another year could help him show schools what kind of player he is when he’s not dealing with injuries.

The Judge senior who scored 11.3 points per game this season did so with a shoulder injury. Reed is going to have surgery for a torn labrum in the coming weeks, marking the third consecutive year he’s had to deal with an offseason injury. In the past two summers, Reed hasn’t been able to do much on the court as he was slowed by a strain in his right Achilles tendon.

The 6-foot point guard who displayed his shooting touch as well as court vision with 20 points for Waterview Dan Rumph on Tuesday is getting looks from small colleges such as Neumann, Albright and Rosemont. But Reed is leaning toward a year at a prep school and a shot to put his game on full display while healthy.

“I just want to show people what I’m capable of,” Reed said.
