Within a college basketball program, when things aren’t going well on the court, some recruiting success is always sure to provide a nice pick-me-up.

The 3-8 Lafayette Leopards got just that before entering Patriot League play, securing a commitment from Australian power forward Myles Cherry, a source confirmed to CoBL.

Cherry is in his first year both in the United States and at Choate Rosemary Hall, a Connecticut boarding school that competes in the extremely competitive New England Preparatory School Academic Council.

At 6-foot-7, he’s got a solid left-handed stroke from the mid-range and can finish well in the post with both hands. Cherry runs the floor well and has great vision both facing up and with his back to the basket. His ability to stretch the floor and overall offensive versatility should be a nice boost to the Leopards’ front court.

Cherry should fit in especially well when paired with another talented forward in sophomore Matt Klinewski, who’s currently the team’s second-leading scorer. The duo will be the only real offensive threats inside once Cherry arrives on campus; Lafayette will have no senior big men in 2016-17 and current freshmen Tyler Barlow and Sam Dunkum are contribute predominantly on the defensive end.

The Leopards currently don’t have another inside piece committed in the 2016 class, although Cherry joins two signees in Houston-area guard Hunter Janacek and Parkland (Pa.) wing Kyle Stout in their current class. They have two scholarships remaining, with Central Bucks West (Pa.) guard Cal Reichwein also in the fold as a preferred walk-on.

Lafayette will begin Patriot League play tomorrow with a trip to Colgate.

CoBL will have more on this story shortly.
