St. Joseph’s bounced back from its Tuesday night loss to Villanova with a close, 80-78, win against Columbia on Friday night on the road in Levien Gymnasium.

At first…
It was Isaiah Miles and Aaron Brown who carried the Hawks throughout the first half, combining for 22 points, and Miles had three monster blocks. A-10 Preseason Player of the Year DeAndre Bembry was held scoreless for the first 27 minutes of the game. Papa Ndao saw his first minutes in over two seasons (17:24), and although did not make much of an impact in the first half, his second efforts would prove vital.

Turning point…
Down 51-48, Brown started an 11-0 run for St. Joseph’s at the 10:43 mark. In addition to offensive efforts, the Hawks were able to shut down Columbia’s backdoor cut that the team had been struggling with all game. This wouldn’t be the end for Columbia, though, as the team came within 3 points with 1:14 left in the game. After some elbows were thrown under the basket with 42 seconds left in the game, each team was awarded a technical foul which brought Columbia within 2. That’s as close as the Lions would come, though, as Bembry found his stride, scoring 12 in the second half, and St. Joe’s pulled away with the win.

Shining stars...
After being honored with a ceremonial game ball during pre-game ceremonies, the newest Columbia University record holder for 3-pointers made Maodo Lo displayed his inside game in addition to his work behind the arc. He added 19 points for the Lions. Teammate Alex Rosenberg would ultimately be the difference maker, though, with 21 points.

Brown contributed heavily for the Hawks with 26 points, 16 of those coming in the second half. Miles gave the Hawks an offensive boost in the first half with 12 points, and Bembry was within shouting distance of a triple-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Noteworthy number…
9

Papa Ndao, after missing the last season due to health reasons, was cleared today and played nine minutes for St. Joe’s and contributed an important nine points from behind the 3-point line in the second half.

Up next...

Columbia (4-4) vs. Delaware (4-2) (2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6)
