Lafayette didn’t make its home opener against Saint Peter’s easy. The Leopards had a first-half lead as big as 17, and led for nearly the entire game.

But the Peacocks tied the game in regulation, and then went up by nine points in overtime. That’s when Lafayette’s press and Nick Lindner took over. Lindner, a junior point guard, scored the game’s last six points, including the game-winning layup with 12 seconds left, to lift Lafayette, 87-86.

The star of last year’s Patriot League Tournament, Lindner had 22 points in the game, 11 of which came in overtime to help the Leopards get on the winning side of things for the first time in 2015-16.

At First…
It was a great first half for Lafayette. In their home opener, the Leopards raised their Patriot League Tournament championship banner before tipoff and gave their fans plenty more to cheer about in the first 15 minutes of play. They went up 35-18 with about five minutes left in the first half, but that lead would not stick.

Turning point…
With the Leopards down 83-74 in the extra period, Fran O’Hanlon called a timeout with just two minutes remaining. Out of it, the Leopards got a 3-pointer from Linder, and then a steal from Bryce Scott on the inbounds pass, which led to two points at the free throw line for Zach Rufer. Five points in 10 seconds will aid any comeback significantly.

Shining stars…
Lindner was the star of overtime, and therefore the game. He’s Lafayette’s best player, but didn’t play like it for much of the second half, as he was held without a field goal. But he helped will the Leopards to victory and also had six assists to go with his 22 points. Meanwhile, Monty Boykins and Scott were huge contributors, scoring 16 and 18 points, respectively. The duo also combined to go 6-for-10 from beyond the arc.

For the Peacocks, junior forward Quadir Welton (Math, Civics and Sciences) had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds

Up next…
