On Monday night, sources told CoBL that Math, Civics & Sciences guard, former St. John's commit Samir Doughty, had been offered by Virginia Commonwealth and planned on visiting with a "plan to commit."

On Thursday, Doughty indeed announced his commitment to the Atlantic 10 school via Twitter. 

Doughty, who finished his prep career with 1,766 points, had originally been committed and signed to play at St. John's. But the departure of Steve Lavin raised some questions as to whether or not Doughty would play there under new coach Chris Mullin.

One school's loss is another's gain.

VCU also will have a new coach to start the 2015-16 season. Shaka Smart left the program he built into a powerhouse for the University of Texas. New coach Will Wade adds Doughty to a recruiting class that had just one player, 6-7 wing Gerron Scissum, before today.

Doughty, at 6-4, was a big-time scoring guard in the Public League during his time in high school. He averaged 24.5 ppg in his senior campaign. 

The departure of Smart, some graduating seniors and the transfer of others (including Phelps School grad Terry Larrier), opens up Doughty to potentially see immediate playing time for the Rams next year.
