Lots of suitors in line for Damion Lee

Ever since it became public that Damion Lee would be graduating from Drexel and playing his final year of collegiate eligibility somewhere else, his phone has been quite busy.

It made sense that plenty of programs would be interested in the services of the 6-foot-6 wing, a three-year starter who was the country’s fifth-leading scorer (21.4 ppg) last season. But even he wasn’t expecting how popular he would be.

The number of schools who’ve reached out is “close to 70-something,” he said on Sunday, giving him quite a list to sort through.

“I understand that some schools are trying to get in contact or would want me because they were just looking at the stats and stuff and seeing this guy could score the ball, but I definitely was surprised by the reaction,” he said.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Lee graduated from Calvert Hall in 2010 before spending a prep year at St. Thomas More (Conn.) and then beginning a very successful four-year run at Drexel that was marred by injuries. He missed all but five games of the 2013-14 season with a torn ACL, and a broken hand knocked him out the last few games of his impressive redshirt junior year.

Now, the two-time First Team All-CAA selection and former CAA Rookie of the Year is looking to show he can perform at a high level on a bigger stage.

“I’d definitely like to thank Drexel for everything they’ve done for me, giving me the opportunity to play college basketball,” he said. “The coaching staff there, they’re all great guys and I really loved the environment that Drexel provided and everything. I have nothing but great things to say about Drexel.”

Maryland and St. John’s have both been rumored as possible landing spots for Lee, but they’re only two of the numerous high-major programs that have reached out. With so many suitors, he’s got time to sort through his options and see which one fits his needs the best.

“Top priority is to go in there, play my game, come in, be a focal point of the team from the wing position,” he said. “Play 30 minutes a game, go out there, help a team get to the tournament or get back to the tournament and look to make a deep run.

“And with all that being said, I’m looking to improve my draft stock, to put myself in the best position I feel to get drafted,” he added.

Lee has spoken with both Maryland and St. John’s, but denied that they were any more intense than his discussions with any other schools.

“It’s been the same, general conversations with both of them, just expressing their interest in me,” he said.
