Dan Jackson is taking an “indefinite” leave of absence as Math, Civics and Sciences head coach and will be temporarily replaced by assistant David Ruffin

MC&S athletic director Lonnie Diggs did not provide an exact time frame for Jackson’s return.

Jackson confirmed the news in a text message, saying “I’m on a leave of absence for a while maybe back this year maybe not have some personal and educational issues to deal [sic].”

Earlier today, MC&S was defeated in a Public League matchup with Imhotep, 72-55. According to sources who were at the game, Jackson was not present on the team’s bench.

MC&S currently holds a record of 7-8 (1-4 Pub ‘A’) through 15 games in 2014-15.

Since signing on as the school’s first head coach in 2007, Jackson boasts a record of 168 wins and 76 losses over a roughly eight-year tenure.

Even more impressive than Jackson's overall mark is MC&S’ 77-22 record in Public League play with him on the sideline.

In 2012, MC&S made school history, sending its first three players off to play Division I basketball under Jackson’s watch. Quadir Welton, a 6-foot-8 forward/center, signed with Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, while 5-10 point guard Britton Lee and 6-6 forward Jeremiah Worthem both elected to start their college careers at Robert Morris University outside of Pittsburgh.

The most recent player to join MC&S’ group of Division I recruits will be senior Samir Doughty.

Doughty, a 6-4 shooting guard, committed to St. John’s back in November and has been a scoring dynamo for MC&S this season. Doughty scored a school-record 47 points in an 89-63 victory over visiting Elmer L. Meyers on Dec. 13, putting up a whopping 21 points in the final quarter alone; he held the previous record of 45 points.

Doughty has already scored 409 points this season, more than any other player in the Public League’s A Division.

Doughty and MC&S are set to take on Philadelphia Electric and Technology in their second game without Jackson this Thursday.
