The area’s high school league conference races are in full swing, so we’re taking a look around the Delaware Valley’s various high school basketball leagues to see where things stand at the moment and what games will determine regular-season champions and postseason spots down the stretch.

Read ahead for the Suburban One League update, or click the links below to check out the other leagues we’re providing updates on:

The SOL did away with the divisional crossover slate this year, so it’s back to a 10-game league slate. Yes, the league’s 24 members are engaging in a smaller three-game set of crossovers this week, one against one team from the other three divisions based on competitive balance, but they don’t count toward the table.

So with league play effectively at the midpoint, here’s a glance at who’s sitting where.

For league playoff purposes: the four division winners earn automatic bids to host quarterfinals (in the event of a tie, the team with the highest district power rating gets the home game) and the four wild cards are the teams with the next four highest district power rating, regardless of classification.

SOL Liberty

The first half of Liberty division play ended with a bang, Upper Dublin downing Plymouth Whitemarsh in one of the more anticipated games of the season so far to take the top spot at 5-0. It only seems right then that the two powers will meet again at PW to end the regular season and potentially with an outright or shared division title on the line at Gym West on Feb. 4.

Abington sits third at 3-2, the Ghosts’ losses coming to UD and PW and wanting nothing more than to trip up one or both to muddy the waters in the second half. The Ghosts get Upper Dublin on the road on Jan.24  and Plymouth Whitemarsh at home on Jan. 31.

If there’s a possible spoiler out there, watch Wissahickon sitting at 2-3 in the league. The Trojans’ biggest rival is Upper Dublin - it’s less than five minutes to drive between the schools - and Wiss has surprised PW in the past.

Hatboro-Horsham has a bit of a climb but the Hatters are hoping to make a push for the Class 5A playoffs in the second half of the season. It’s been a rough year for Quakertown, but the Panthers’ lone win thus far came against a quality Dock Mennonite team so anything can always happen.

SOL Colonial

The Colonial has certainly been interesting, CB South sitting at a sterling 5-0 at the top of the table thanks to a one-point win over 4-1 Souderton on Jan. 7. The Titans, and Big Red for that matter, weren’t even playoff teams last year so both have enjoyed turnaround seasons so far, sitting No. 7 and No. 12 respectively in the District 1 Class 6A standings as of late afternoon on Jan.9.

Souderton will get a chance to avenge that loss - a foul with 2.1 seconds left wiped out what would have been the go-ahead three - on South’s floor in the regular season finale on Feb. 4. At the moment, that’s a de facto league championship game but both teams will have to navigate the league unblemished to keep it that way.

Behind them, it’s a three-way tie between 2-3 CB East, North Penn and Pennridge. CB West, the SOL tournament runner-up this year, was hit heavily by graduation but despite an 0-5 league record, the Bucks have been competitive.

SOL Patriot

This is the only division without a solitary occupant in the lead seat. Bensalem and Pennsbury currently share the head of the table, the Owls with a head-to-head win over the Falcons, but CR South having clipped Bensalem in their first meeting. CR South, CR North and Neshaminy are all 2-3 and Harry S Truman is 1-4 behind them.

Bensalem and Pennsbury meet again on Jan. 23 in Fairless Hills, a game that carries plenty of value for both teams.

Prior to the season, coaches from every team in the division agreed it felt wide-open this year and while it’s a two-team tie halfway through, a result here or there could easily draw more contenders in. CR South plays Bensalem again on Jan. 31 and the Golden Hawks face Pennsbury on Feb. 4.

SOL Freedom

Cheltenham has done a really good job of taking care of things in its division the past couple of years. The Panthers are perched atop the standings again at 5-0, their 55-53 win over Upper Moreland on Dec. 20 the separation in the table against the 4-1 Golden Bears.

Upper Moreland hosts the rematch on Jan. 28. Before that, both teams will have to get past William Tennent again, UM on Jan. 21 and Cheltenham on Jan. 24. Tennent, at 3-2, lost to both the first time around as part of its 0-5 start but the Panthers have won six of their last seven since then.

Springfield Twp will be looking for a big result the second time through as it battles for a Class 5A playoff berth while Lower Moreland and New Hope-Solebury round out the standings, both teams in a rebuilding mode.

Haley Moran and Sydney Ralph have helped CB East to a 5-0 record in the SOL Colonial. The Patriots will host all five of their division games the second time around.

SOL Colonial

CB East wrapped up its first half of league play with a perfect 5-0 record. In an interesting twist, the Patriots did so playing all five of those games away from home (as they did in their first 11 games to start the season, crazy story) so the road to the league title will now effectively run through Buckingham.

North Penn, the team East defeated to finish up that long road swing, sits second at 4-1 in the standings. A young Knights team has been up and down, they’re just 5-7 overall as of Jan. 9, but they’ve mostly handled business within the league and will get another crack at CB East on Feb. 4 in the regular season finale.

CB South is 3-2 and sitting in third place, the Titans only losing to North Penn by two in their first meeting. Pennridge is 2-3, the Rams playing better of late, with a young Souderton team and CB West following behind.

SOL Freedom

The top team in the Freedom: Cheltenham.

First year coach Monique Boykins has the Panthers playing at a high level this season, their athleticism and energy causing all sorts of problems for division and nonleague opponents. Cheltenham made a statement with a big win over defending division champion Lower Moreland and also gave Upper Dublin all it could handle in an early season contest. They’ve only played seven games as of Jan. 13, but the Panthers are sitting well at 5-0 in the division and 6-2 overall at No. 7 in the Class 6A rankings.

New Hope-Solebury is currently in second at 4-1 with Lower Moreland sitting third at 3-2 in the division. Cheltenham gets Lower Moreland on Jan. 21 and New Hope-Solebury on Jan. 31 and in between, New Hope-Solebury and Lower Moreland meet again on Jan. 28.

William Tennent at 2-3 and Upper Moreland at 1-4 didn’t have the results they wanted the first time around the division, but both teams certainly have the talent to pick up a win that could sway the table in round two.

SOL Liberty

The Liberty table is a little unbalanced - Quakertown isn’t playing a league schedule this year - but it’s Upper Dublin at the top with a 4-0 record. The Cardinals, who ran the table in the league last year, have balanced their unbeaten SOL start with a challenging nonleague slate.

Abington sits second at 4-1, the Ghosts also playing a tough nonleague slate of their early in the season but playing much better since mid-December. They’ll get their second look at Upper Dublin on Jan. 24.

Plymouth Whitemarsh dropped its first meetings with Upper Dublin and Abington, but the Colonials pushed both opponents doing so. PW rematches with Abington on Jan. 30 and Upper Dublin on Feb. 4.

SOL Patriot

Just like on the boys’ side, the Patriot is the only SOL girls’ division without a solo leader and instead has a three-team fighting for top dibs.

Neshaminy beat CR South, which beat Pennsbury, which beat Neshaminy to set up a triple entente of 4-1 squads. They all play again, of course, so it’s probable someone will emerge from the pack and the other teams in the division could have a say in that too.

Council Rock South plays Neshaminy on Jan. 21 and Pennsbury on Feb. 4 and Pennsbury plays Neshaminy on Jan. 28.

Bensalem’s 2-3 in the division, but the Owls have taken a couple tough losses and for sure could swing a big result or two the second time around.
