The area’s high school league conference races are in full swing, so we’re taking a look around the Delaware Valley’s various high school basketball leagues to see where things stand at the moment and what games will determine regular-season champions and postseason spots down the stretch.

As expected the Catholic League has already separated into two tiers through the first three or four games of the season. Archbishop Wood, Conwell-Egan, Lansdale Catholic, Archbishop Carroll, Neumann-Goretti and Cardinal O’Hara are all 3-1, 3-0 or 4-0, Neumann’s win over O’Hara the only ding in the group; Nazareth Academy, Little Flower, St. Hubert’s, Archbishop Ryan, Bonner Prendergast and West Catholic have already found it tough going against the group above.

The PCL schedule-makers knew what they were doing, back-loading the schedule with all the juicy matchups. Those start on Tuesday, Jan. 14, as Archbishop Wood hosts Lansdale Catholic in a rematch of the 2023 title game; three days later, the Vikings host O’Hara in yet another high-level matchup of the defending 5A and 6A state champion, while Neumann-Goretti hosts Archbishop Carroll that Saturday (Jan. 18) in a great backcourt battle. Definitely keep an eye out for Thursday, Jan. 30, when Neumann-Goretti hosts Wood and O’Hara hosts Carroll.

We’re (for the most part) five games into the Catholic League slate, and already we’re starting to get an idea of some tiers. So far, it’s St. Joe’s Prep sitting alone at the top (5-0) having proven itself by beating  Roman Catholic last week, the Hawks now riding a seven-game win streak. Right behind them with one loss are Devon Prep and Father Judge (4-1) plus Bonner-Prendergast and Roman Catholic (3-1), all of whom so far look like legitimate threats to make it to the Palestra. Cardinal O’Hara (3-2) opened some eyes by beating Ryan and Carroll to open league play, but has a tough stretch ahead with trips to Wood, Neumann-Goretti and Bonner.

At the other end of the standings, a few programs with high expectations are in need of a significant turnaround. Archbishop Wood is 0-3, though the Vikings have dealt with injuries this season, just like Archbishop Carroll (2-3), which has seen as many as three starters sidelined. Neumann-Goretti (1-3) also has work to do, while Lansdale Catholic (0-5) and Conwell-Egan (1-3) are going through some more expected growing pains. In the middle are Archbishop Ryan, La Salle and West Catholic, all 2-3 with a couple good results and a couple less-good ones.

With the depth in the Catholic League, there’s far too many good games remaining to highlight them all. But there’s certainly a few that have caught our eye over the next couple weeks, by which point the standings might look quite different: Roman Catholic playing Bonner on Jan. 19 (Sunday) at Holy Family; Devon Prep hosting La Salle on Jan. 21 (Tuesday); Roman hosts Father Judge on Jan. 24 (Friday) at Holy Family in what might be the highest-profile regular-season game in the whole league, with Bonner hosting O’Hara and Prep hosting La Salle that same night

We’ll take another look at the Catholic League later this month to see how things are shaping up and how the playoffs are looking at that point.
