District 12 will finalize the 21 boys and 20 girls participants it will send to the PIAA tournament this week. The top finishers in the Catholic League and Public League will face off in eight different title games (four boys, four girls) to crown a district champion. There are also seven other games to decide state qualification and seeding.

The main event will come Saturday when Public League boys champion Imhotep Charter faces Catholic League boys runner-up Archbishop Ryan in the District 12-5A championship. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lincoln, pitting Catholic League co-MVP Thomas Sorber (Georgetown) and Public League MVP Ahmad Nowell against each other. Imhotep has taken down Ryan in the district title game in each of the past two seasons.

There are a few more intriguing matchups, beginning with Archbishop Wood and Northeast boys on Tuesday night, which will decide the third and final 6A team from District 12 in states. Both fell in the quarterfinals of their league tournaments. 

A girls/boys doubleheader at West Philadelphia on Wednesday night has two fun ones. Th ePublic League girls runner-up Imhotep Charter plays West Catholic in the 3A championship for the second year in a row. The Class 4A boys championship follows with ‘B’ Division champion Engineering & Science going up against a Neumann-Goretti team that could be really short handed due to injuries and PIAA transfer rules.

Thursday features another championship doubleheader at La Salle College High School with two of the top four teams from both the PCL and Pub girls side. First, Public League champion Audenried goes for the District 12 Class 4A championship against Nazareth Academy. Then it’s Catholic League champion Archbishop Wood against Freire Charter for the 5A title

A Friday night Devon Prep and MCS boys game for the 3A championship — the second half of a doubleheader at West Philadelphia HS — should be another good one before the heavyweight battle between Imhotep Charter and Archbishop Ryan on Saturday afternoon.
