A coach synonymous with Big 5 basketball reached a rare milestone Sunday on a busy day for the city's teams.

La Salle's victory over Coppin State gave legendary coach Fran Dunphy, the only person to coach multiple Big 5 teams, his 600th career win in his 30th season leading a program.

That was the biggest highlight of Sunday's action, but not the only one.

The Wildcats tipped off a jam-packed Sunday for Big 5 teams, featuring six of the 12 men's and women's programs in action, with a road victory over Wake Forest.

The rest of the day featured Saint Joseph's, La Salle, Drexel and Penn. We will update this roundup throughout the afternoon with coverage from each game.

Here's how local teams fared Sunday:

MBB: La Salle 81, Coppin State 62

Dunphy won his 600th career game as a college head coach, becoming the 43rd in NCAA Division I history to do so.

Dunphy, a La Salle graduate and a Big 5 Hall of Fame coach, took over the Explorers last season. He's in his 30th season leading a Big 5 program, including Penn (1989-06) and Temple (2006-19).

Anwar Gill led La Salle (5-1) with 21 points. He scored 13 of the team's first 17 points, and the Explorers closed the first half on a 15-4 run to take a 34-27 lead. Anwar was 8-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds.

Three other explorers reached double figures, with Rokas Jocius recording a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting. Khalil Brantley and Jhamir Brickus each had six assists to go along with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Greg Spurlock led Coppin State with 15 points.

La Salle visits Dunphy's last head coaching stop, Temple, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

WBB: Villanova 74, Wake Forest 65

Christina Dalce recorded her fifth career double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Lucy Olsen made it five straight games this season with double-digit points to lead the Wildcats (4-1)  to their first win over Wake Forest in program history.

Nova only played the Demon Deacons one other time, in the 1988 NCAA Tournament, and lost.

Olsen was 7-of-17 from the field for 21 points, and she added five assists and four rebounds.

A 9-0 Villanova run in the first quarter staked it to a 23-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Wake Forest cut that down to one point, 45-44, in the third quarter and then tied it 61-61 with 5:01 to play. Still tied 65-65 with 1:08 to play, Olsen sank a 3-pointer and the Wildcats went 6-for-6 from the foul line to pull away late.

Kaitlyn Orihel scored 14 points, including crucial, back-to-back 3-pointers in the second half. And Brynn McCurry chipped in 12. Malaya Cowles led Wake with 22 points, and Raegyn Conley contributed 14 in a losing effort.

Villanova hosts Richmond on Thursday at 7 p.m.

MBB: Old Dominion 68, Drexel 61 (OT)

Drexel went scoreless in the first three minutes of overtime, spotting Old Dominion five points during that stretch in a non-conference loss Sunday.

The Dragons (3-3) struggled to shoot all game, going just 18-of-54 (33.3%) from the field and 3-of-21 (14.3%) from 3-point range in the loss. The Dragons turned the ball over 18 times.

Amari Williams led Drexel with 19 points (5-of-13 shooting, 9-of-10 on free throws) and had four rebounds but six assists. Lamar Oden Jr. added 11 points and nine boards in the loss.

Three Monarchs scored in double figures, led by Tyrone Williams' 21 points and 12 rebounds.

WBB: Penn 76, UC San Diego 68

The Quakers concluded a four-game road swing with a West Coast win Sunday, capping a 3-1 stretch.

Jordan Obi played all 40 minutes and scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting (3-of-3 from distance). She also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Lizzy Groetsch nearly had her first double-double of the season with 10 points and nine boards, and Mataya Gayle chipped in 12 points and five dimes. Abby Sharpe had 11 points as well.

Penn (4-2) shot 52.6% from the field (30 of 57), including an electric 12 of 27 in the first quarter to build a 27-21 lead.

The Quakers are not home for long. The return to the friendly confines of The Palestra for a game Wednesday against La Salle but hit the road immediately after for another four straight games.
