It’s time to finally put a bow on the 2022-23 Pennsylvania high school basketball season, at least as far as Southeast Pennsylvania is concerned, with the first-ever CoBL High School Postseason Awards.

For our inaugural high school basketball honors, we divided the area up into PIAA and non-PIAA categories, with boys’ and girls’ teams in each. We’ll start with PIAA boys, then PIAA girls, and then non-PIAA for each.

There is an absolute wealth of hoops talent in these five counties, and this was an incredibly difficult process. Anybody mentioned below, even the honorable mentions, all had fantastic seasons, and there are certainly countless more in the region who deserve to feel good about the years they had. But we had to pick the best of the best, and did our best in our attempt.

Without further ado, our All-Area Boys awards for the 2022-23 season:

Player of the Year

Justin Edwards, Imhotep Charter

Justin Edwards, Sr., Imhotep
Considered a Top 3 player in the 2023 class nationally — and No. 1 by some sources — the 6-7 Kentucky commit is certainly one of the top talents to come through the area in a long time. Edwards, the Philadelphia Public League MVP, averaged 17.9 ppg and 7.5 rpg, while shooting 57.8 percent from the floor and rarely playing a full 32 minutes (or even 24) during the last few months of the season as the Panthers stormed to back-to-back PPL, District 12-5A and PIAA Class 5A title in dominant fashion. He also helped Imhotep become the first team from Pa. to win the prestigious City of Palms Classic. His impact goes well beyond his stats as his impact on the defensive end in the half court and at the top of Imhotep’s press cannot be quantified.

All-Area First Team
Jalil Bethea, Jr., Archbishop Wood
The Philadelphia Catholic League MVP started just one game heading into the season, but put together a monster junior year, leading the PCL in scoring at 23.2 ppg, while adding 7.6 rpg and 3.9 rpg as the Vikings. He propelled his squad to the PCL semis and PIAA Class 6A semifinals. The 6-4 high-major guard is inarguably the area’s best shooter, knocking down a PCL best 85 threes at a 45.7 percent clip, while also shooting 53.6 percent from the floor and 89 percent from the free throw line.

Xzayvier Brown, Sr., Roman Catholic
The 6-1 point guard and St. Joe’s commit was a first team All-PCL selection as he averaged 17.0 ppg, 4.6 apg, 3.4 rpg and 2.3 spg and helped his team capture a Catholic League championship, District 12-6A championship and reach the PIAA 6A title game (coming just an overtime period short of another crown). One of the most clutch players around, he most notably hit the shot of the year to send the PCL title game into OT and continued to make big plays throughout the postseason.

Jackson Hicke, Sr., Radnor
Hicke was the best player in District 1 this season and the Delco Times Player of the Area and the top non-Imhotep public school player in the area. The 6-5 wing headed to Princeton next season was a first team All-Central League pick as he averaged 19.4 ppg (on 60.4 percent shooting), 8.3 rpg, 3.0 apg and 1.6 apg for a Radnor team that started 29-0, capturing the Central League title and first District 1-5A title since 1961 before falling for the first time in the PIAA quarters. He finished his career with 1,154 points.

Thomas Sorber, Jr., Archbishop Ryan
Another high-major target and the best big man the Catholic League has seen in a while piled up 17.1 ppg, 10.8 rpg and 4.4 bpg this season, while shooting 61.3 percent from the field (second in PCL) despite being swarmed by opposing defenses. Sorber, a 6-9 forward, led the PCL in rebounds, blocked shots and double-doubles (17) to earn first team All-PCL honors while his team made the league quarterfinals and reached the PIAA Class 5A semifinals

Robert Wright III, Jr., Neumann-Goretti
Wright averaged 23.1 ppg (second in PCL), 4.6 rpg, 4.9 apg and 2.2 spg as he earned first team All-PCL honors and was named the PA Gatorade Player of the Year. The 6-1 guard, who already has 1,213 points in his career, led the Saints to Catholic League and PIAA Class 4A runner-up finishes along with a District 12-4A title, in which he scored a school record 43 points, during a 26-4 campaign. Baylor commit will play his senior year at Montverde Academy (Fla.)

Second Team

Sultan Adewale, Neumann-Goretti

Sultan Adewale, Sr., Neumann-Goretti
The 6-8 senior forward, who recently committed to Iona, averaged 14.8 ppg on 58.9 percent shooting to go along with 10.3 rpg (2nd in PCL) and 2.0 bpg and led the league in offensive rebounding as he earned first team All-PCL honors for the PCL and PIAA runner-ups. Adewale, who had 15 double-doubles this season, averaged 15.2 ppg and 12.4 rpg during the Saints’ run to Hershey.

Rahmir Barno, Sr., Imhotep Charter
A 5-11 point guard headed to Florida Gulf Coast, Barno averaged 12.0 ppg and 5.2 apg to earn first team All-Philadelphia Public League honors. He was one the three key cogs for the Panthers PPL, District 12 and PIAA championship squad, and was also MVP of the City of Palms Classic.

Adam “Budd” Clark, Sr., West Catholic
Clark averaged 18.8 ppg (3rd in PCL) on 53 percent shooting to go along with 5.5 apg (2nd in PCL), 5.2 rpg and a PCL-leading 3.8 spg as he earned first team All-PCL honors. The 5-10 Merrimack-bound guard, who finished his career with 1,253 points, helped the Burrs go 20-10, reach the PCL semifinals, win the program’s first district title since 1953 and claim the PIAA Class 3A title for the first state championship in school history.

Jaron McKie, So., St. Joe’s Prep
The 6-2 guard was a first team All-PCL selection as he averaged 16.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.0 apg and 2.0 spg, also knocking down 68 threes on 43.3 percent shooting. He helped his team to a 16-7 mark and a PCL quarterfinal trip as he made the leap into the upper-echelon of guards in the Catholic League as a sophomore.

Ahmad Nowell, Jr., Imhotep Charter
The 6-1 junior guard is another high-major recruit. He averaged 13.3 ppg and shot 39.1 percent from beyond the arc for the 30-3 Panthers, earning first team All-Philadelphia Public League honors. Nowell, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark during the PPL playoffs, helped his team to consecutive PPL, District 12 and PIAA titles, along with the City of Palms championship.

Izaiah Pasha, Sr., Cardinal O’Hara
Originally an Iona commit who is now reclassifying to the Class of 2024 for a prep year, Pasha was another first team All-PCL selection. The 6-5 guard/wing was a playmaking slasher, averaging 17.7 ppg (5th in PCL), 7.7 rpg, 4.3 apg and 1.9 apg as he shot 52 percent from the field. Pasha, who finished his career with 1,044 points led the Lions to the PCL quarters and PIAA second round during an 18-9 season.

Third Team

Dylan Blair, Downingtown West

Dylan Blair, Sr., Downingtown West
The 5-11 guard headed to play at Army West Point next season averaged 19 ppg, 7 rpg and 5.0 rpg, earning Ches-Mont League Player of the Year. Blair, a four-time first team All-Ches-Mont selection with 1,563 career points, led the Whippets to a 20-8 mark and Ches-Mont League championship along with a District 1-6A semifinal trip and second-round finish in states, recording 30 and 32 points in his two state playoff contests.

Qudire Bennett, Sr., Plymouth Whitemarsh
Bennett, a 6-5 wing still searching for his college home, averaged 20.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 2.7 spg for the Suburban One League Liberty Division, SOL Tournament and District 1-6A champions. He was a first team All-SOL Liberty selection for the 27-3 Colonials and finished his career with 1,362 points to rank seventh in program history.

KJ Cochran, Soph., West Chester East
The 6-3 guard with offers from St. Joe’s and Northern Illinois already has 793 points in two varsity seasons. He was a first team All-Ches-Mont selection as he averaged 17.6 ppg and helped the Vikings reach the second round of the PIAA Class 5A tournament. Will go to the Perkiomen School next year.

Zion Stanford, Sr., West Catholic
The 6-5 wing headed to Temple averaged 18.5 ppg (on 53.8 percent shooting), 6.4 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.0 spg an 1.5 bpg for the historic Burrs squad. The first team All-PCL selection combined with Clark to help West Catholic to the PCL semis, District 12-3A title and PIAA Class 3A championship.

Nasir Washington, Sr., Penn Wood
Washington, a 6-3 guard, made his mark at Penn Wood after transferring from West Philadelphia at the start of the school year. He averaged 24.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg and 2.0 spg, knocking down 66 threes, for a 16-8 squad, which included a monster 37-point outing in a District 1 playoff win over Norristown. He finished his career with 1,133 points.

Darren Williams, Jr., Archbishop Ryan
A recent Florida Gulf Coast commit, the 6-4 guard averaged 16.4 ppg, 2.6 apg, 4.5 rpg and 2.1 spg and knocked down 81 threes to earn first team All-PCL honors. He helped the Raiders’ 17-11 squad, which was shorthanded in the PIAA postseason, reach the state semifinals.

Fourth Team

Sam Brown, Lower Merion

Sam Brown, Sr., Lower Merion
The 6-2 lefty Penn commit and one of the area’s top shooters (80 threes) was a first team All-Central League pick after averaging 17.7 ppg and 3.6 apg. Brown finished his career with 1,325 points as he helped the Aces get back to the District 1-6A semifinals and reach the second round of the PIAA tournament.

Chase Coleman, Jr., Plymouth Whitemarsh
Back in the area this season, the 6-2 guard averaged 18.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.4 apg and 2.0 spg to earn first team All-Suburban One Liberty honors for the District 1-6A, SOL Liberty and SOL Tournament champions as the Colonials finished the season 27-3.

Kareem Diaz, Sr., Dobbins Tech
A 6-5 wing forward, Diaz led an upstart Dobbins Tech that didn’t have much preseason buzz yet went 25-3, made it to the Public League semifinals and then beat Father Judge to earn a spot in the state tournament. The Cheyney commit, an athletic lefty wing guard, averaged 21 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.8 spg and 2.1 apg, doing everything from running point, leading his team in scoring, defending the rim and more.

Nadir Myers, Sr., Upper Darby
The Royals’ senior core which powered them to a 21-win season and win in the PIAA 6A state playoffs was guided by Myers, their on-court and emotional leader who kept them all together. The dynamic 5-10 lefty lead guard, a terrific outside shooter and ball-handler who knows how to set up his teammates, averaged 19.4 ppg and 3.8 apg, and his locker room presence was equally impactful.

Jacob Nguyen, Soph., Spring-Ford
The 6-4 guard was a first team All-Pioneer Athletic Conference selection during a breakout sophomore campaign that saw him average 16.5 ppg (3rd in PAC) and knock down 76 triples. He helped Spring-Ford win a PAC title and make its deepest postseason runs in program history with trips to the District 1-6A title game and PIAA semifinals.

Julian Sadler, Jr., Perkiomen Valley
The best scoring guard in the PAC was this all-Liberty First Team selection, who led Perkiomen Valley to an 18-11 record and berth in the PIAA Class 6A tournament. A 6-2 left-hander who can score from all three levels, Sadler averaged 20.5 ppg and shot 39.8% from 3-point range, scoring 26 points in the Vikings’ win over Neshaminy to wrap up the state berth.

Dean Coleman-Newsome, Sr. G, Archbishop Carroll
The 6-4 uncommitted senior averaged 15.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.8 apg and 1.8 spg to earn second team All-PCL honors for the 15-9 Patriots.

Tristen Guillouette, Jr., St. Joe’s Prep

Jacen Holloway, Sr., Devon Prep
Another All-PCL second team selection, the 6-5 senior guard averaged 17.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.5 apg and 1.1 spg for the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinalist Tide. He’s headed to USMAPS, the military academy prep school, for a prep year before playing at Army West Point.

Nathan Lapp, Sr., Dock Mennonite

Mazen Sayed, Sr. G, Chichester
One of the best seasons in Chichester history ended in the PIAA 5A playoffs after a Del-Val title and run to the district semifinals. Sayed, a 6-0 point guard headed to Gwynedd Mercy, was the Eagles’ leader on both ends, averaging 18.7 ppg, 7.0 apg and 4.0 rpg.

Sixth Team

Connor Fleet, West Chester Henderson

Connor Fleet, Jr., West Chester Henderson
A 6-0 combo guard, Fleet is a wizard with the ball in his hands, averaging 16.6 ppg, 3.5 apg and 3.5 rpg while hitting 40% from 3-point range as Hendy made it to the PIAA 6A state tournament.

Zuri Harris, Jr., Coatesville

Jake Sniras, Soph., Garnet Valley
One of the top underclassmen in District 1 is Sniras, a 6-3 wing who was a major reason Garnet Valley not only made it to the PIAA 6A tournament but won a game, his buzzer-beater lifting the Jaguars past Cumberland Valley, his second game-winner of the season. For the year, the 6-3 shooting guard averaged 17.6 ppg and 4.0 rpg.
