Grassroots season is here.

The summer slate — which many people refer to as ‘AAU’ even though the actual Amateur Athletic Union is hardly a factor on the scene anymore — is always an eventful four months, stretching from the first weekend of April through the last week of July, after which the focus turns to preparation for the 2023-24 hoops season.

First up on the local calendar is the Philly Pride Media Day, which features the Under Armour-backed program’s various teams going head-to-head over the course of eight sets, taking place at Abington Friends this Saturday, April 1.

The main draw are Philly Pride’s National squads, especially at the 16U and 17U level, where they’re stocked with Division I talent; the 15U team is also very promising, but most of its players are just a little too young to be on college radars just yet. The Philly Pride program also has a Select division, featuring players from around the area; a 302 division, featuring players from Delaware; a Bucks County division, with ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams at the 16U and 17U level; and a Philly Pride Aces program, also featuring players from around the area.

The main draw will be Pride's 17U national squad, which features Cardinal O'Hara senior Izaiah Pasha -- who will be doing a year of prep school and moving into the 2024 class -- as well as Westtown School's 6-11 Matt Gilhool, Malvern Prep's Ryan Williams, Penn Wood's Nasir Washington and more.

Philly Pride’s national roster plays on the Under Armour Circuit, which has stops this month in Arizona (April 21-23) and South Carolina (April 28-30), while the rest of the teams will play in various regional events.
