With the Philadelphia Public League Tournament wrapped and the Philadelphia Catholic League championships finishing Monday night, District 12 is almost ready to decide its representatives and their seedings in the PIAA tournament. There are 15 games between Public League and Catholic League squads, including eight District 12 championships to be handed out and three games that serve as play-ins for the state tournament.

The headliners include a potential true city title game in the District 12 Class 4A Girls Championship where first-time Public League champion Audenried and PPL MVP Shayla Smith take on Lansdale Catholic and PCL MVP Gabby Casey, which plays in Monday night’s PCL championship. Archbishop Ryan played Imhotep Charter tough in the Class 5A boys title game last season, and led by high-major junior forward Thomas Sorber the Raiders are the most talented team the three-time defending Public League champion Panthers, who feature Kentucky commit and No.1-ranked player Justin Edwards, have played in a while.

The District 12 Class 3A championships provide some intrigue as well, scheduled for a West Catholic doubleheader Friday at West Philadelphia High School. The Imhotep Charter girls face the West Catholic girls in a matchup of two young, but talented squads while the Burrs boys, a PCL semifinalist, take a squad with D1 commits Zion Stanford and Budd Clark go up against an MCS group considered one of the Pub’s most talented despite a quarterfinal exist in the playoffs.

Even though there will be no title up for grabs, Dobbins Tech and Bonner-Prendergast has the potential to be a really good one as the squads battle for District 12’s final Class 5A  spot in the state playoff field. Dobbins had a resurgence this season, making it to the Public League semifinals for the first time in recent history, while Bonner would love to make some noise under first-year head coach Billy Cassidy.
