District 1 6A Boys Second Round Roundup (Tues., Feb. 21)

The District 1 6A boys basketball tournament continued Tuesday night with the second round. Winners advanced to the district quarterfinals and  booked a trip to states, while the losers head to the playback bracket to play for the final four spots in states. Here is a roundup of Tuesday night's action:

1) Spring Ford 55, 17) West Chester Henderson 47

After clinging to a one-point lead at halftime, the top-seeded Rams put together a dominant third quarter, outsourcing Hendy 14-1 in the period on the way to locking up their first district quarterfinal appearance since 2016 and first state playoff bid since 2019. Ej Campbell had 25 for Spring-Ford. He had nine in the first quarter then got going again with eight more in the dominant third quarter. Jacob Nguyen joined him in double figures with 12, while Nyle Ralph-Beyer added 18 for Henderson.

4) Central Bucks East 59, 20) Abington 46

After a number of close calls throughout the season, the Patriots eased past the Ghosts to begin their district tournament run and book their spot in states. CB East took a 25-17 lead into halftime then outscored Abington by seven in the third period to go up 15 heading to the fourth. 

The Patriots, who will host No. 5 Downingtown West in the next round, had four double figures lead the way in Jacob Cummiskey (16), Dhruv Mukund (12), Joey Giordano (10) and Kyle Berndt (10), while Tyler Dandrea added another niner. Cummiskey, Berndt and Mukund combined for the team’s seven threes. Abington’s Jeremiah Lee poured in 22 to keep Abington hanging, and Paul Glantz added another 13. Berndt added 11 rebounds for a double-double.

5) Downingtown West 45, 21) Haverford High 42

Despite trailing 49-23 entering the fourth quarter, the Fords had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds — a Googie Seidman attempt unable to fall to complete the miraculous comeback. Dylan Blair had 15 and Donovan Fromhartz 14 for the Whippets, who were outscored 19-5 in the fourth. Brian Wiener scored 12 points and Kevin Gannon, who hit three triples in the fourth, had 11 for Haverford.

Sam Brown exploded for 36 points to pace the Aces in Tuesday’s second round win — all 36 coming in the first three quarters. The Penn commit scored 10 in the first period as LM jumped out to a 21-11 advantage then added 15 (three 3s) in the second as the Aces expanded their advantage to 42-18 at the break.

Niymire Brown’s 28 points were key as the Royals were the lone double-digit seed to advance to the quarterfinal round with Tuesday’s victory, also locking up the program’s first state playoff berth since 2018. Perk Valley trailed 42-33 heading into the fourth. While the Vikings cut that lead down to one by keeping the Royals scoreless midway through the period, UD pulled back away down the stretch. Yassir Joyner added 15 for Upper Darby, while Juilan Sadler and Kyle Shawaluk scored 12 apiece for PV.

3) Plymouth Whitemarsh 64, 14) Penn Wood 62

Chase Coleman and Qudire Bennett combined for 18 fourth-quarter points as the Colonials escaped upset against Penn Wood with a rally in the final period. Behind the efforts of Nasir Washington, who finished with 23 points, Penn Wood led 46-39 heading into the final period. Coleman and Bennett, who finished with 26 and 22 points respectively, got going in the fourth to spark the Colonials’ rally. Washington got a decent look at a corner three for the game-winner in the final seconds, but it was no good.
