The Division III college basketball season tipped off this week, and a number of men’s and women’s programs in the area brought quality competition in their opening games.

Here’s a roundup of some of the local D-III matchups that stood out on Tuesday and Wednesday:

MBB: Swarthmore 71, Rowan 70

Trailing by two in the season opener on Tuesday, Swarthmore’s George Visconti buried a game-winner 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to lift the Garnet to victory over Rowen. The late shot capped a 23-point performance for the senior guard,

Swarthmore led by double digits in the second half behind a strong showing from Visconti and guard Colin Shaw, who added 20 himself. But Rowan, led by forward Ja’Zere Noel, pushed back to tighten the score. Noel, a freshman at Rowan in 2018-19 before stops at Division II Jefferson and D-I Lincoln, scored 18 points in his return to the Profs.

Rowan took a late lead on a pair of free throws from Marcellus Ross, setting up Visconti to hit the final shot for Swarthmore.

Traveling to Salisbury (Md.) for its first game on Tuesday, Eastern pulled away late as the Eagles secured an overtime win. Junior guard Kaeshawn Ward led the team with 21 points as he shot a staggering 9-of-11 from the field.

Salisbury, led by Greg Bloodsworth and his 25 points, got out to a 37-28 lead at the half before Eastern knotted the game at 77-77 to end regulation. Jaron Fairweather then scored seven points in the overtime period to help the Eagles create the separation they needed.

MBB: Cabrini 72, Rutgers-Camden 63

Ahmadu Sarnor made a big first impression in his Cabrini debut on Wednesday, dropping 23 points while shooting 7-of-10 from the floor in a victory over Rutgers-Camden. A sophomore guard who began his high school years at Collegium Charter but then transferred to the Ranney School (N.J.), where he teamed up with 5* prospects Scottie Lewis and Bryan Antoine Sarnor had previously played for D-I Mississippi Valley State in 2019-20.

He helped the Cavaliers overcome an abysmal first half where the team shot 26% from the field and trailed 28-20 at the break. Sarnor and Aquil Stewart, who had 15 points, led the comeback effort for Cabrini, while Jordan Trusty-Smith scored a team-high 19 for Rutgers-Camden.

MBB: Susquehanna 68, Arcadia 48

Susquehanna showed that the graduation of its top three scorers from a year ago was no sign the River Hawks were ready to slow down, as they used a big second half to pull away from Arcadia, the No. 10 squad in CoBL's area preseason rankings, for a big home win. Frank Marcinek's program led by just three at the break but a 20-4 stretch put them up 50-33 with 11:18 left, and the Knights didn't threaten again, the lead reaching as much as 23.

Quincy Houghton led the way for Susquehanna with 18 points, while Howie Rankine Jr. (11 points) and Brandon Lavitt (10 points) joined him in double figures; Emezie Egeonu added in eight points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench. Arcadia got 13 each from Justin Money and Jalen Watkins, who added 8 rebounds, but the Knights shot just 6-22 in the second half and 18-of-52 (34.6%) for the game and committed 18 turnovers while forcing just four by Susquehanna.

WBB: Arcadia 58, Neumann 47

Three young players just about did it all for Arcadia on Tuesday in an opening win over Neumann. Freshmen Hanna Rhoades and Abby Beam along with sophomore Mara Weaver scored a combined 51 points in the Knights’ victory.

Rhoades led Arcadia with 24 points, with Weaver scoring 15 and Beam adding 12. No other Arcadia player had more than three points.

The scoring output from the three allowed Arcadia to pull away in the second half to fend off Neumann. Lauren Klieber was the main source of offense for Neumann, scoring 29 points while none of her teammates reached double digits.

WBB: Moravian 66, Albright 64

Grad senior Tessa Zamolyi played hero for Moravian on Wednesday, sinking a game-winning layup as time expired to down Albright. Tied at 64 with just over a second left in the fourth quarter, she scored out of a timeout to lift Moravian to victory. Zamolyi led the Greyhounds with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while forward Kayla Yoegel added 12 points.

Albright’s Gabby Boggs produced a game-high 23 points and 15 rebounds to help take the game down to the wire before Mackenzie Dover hit two free throws to even the score on the Lions’ final possession. Ultimately, though, Moravian had one more chance, and Zamolyi converted to secure the win.
