A handful of familiar faces and an inaugural tournament at the Palestra highlight the Penn men’s basketball team’s 2022-23 non-conference schedule, which it announced on Tuesday.

There’s plenty of matchups to be intrigued by before the Quakers begin Ivy League play. Penn struggled out of the gate late season (3-10 non-conference) before a third place conference finish, so an experienced squad hope to start much faster this year.

Coming off a 12-16 finish (9-5 Ivy) a season ago, eighth-year head coach Steve Donahue and his group begin their 2022-23 campaign on the road at Iona (Nov. 7) and Missouri (Nov. 11). The Gaels won 25 games last season and are led by Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino. The game against the Tigers marks the program’s second contest in the state of Missouri and first since a trip to Saint Louis in 1995.

The Quakers return home Nov. 13 to host Towson, a rematch of of Penn’s 76-61 loss to the Tigers (another 25-game winner) in the non-conference last season. Penn next makes a short road trip to the Daskalakis Athletic Center to face Drexel on Nov. 15. It’s the first time Donahue will matchup with his Dragons’ head coach Zach Spiker, who was his assistant at Cornell, since Spiker's first season at Drexel in 2016-17.

Penn’s three-game road trip continues Nov. 18 at West Virginia for the programs’ first meeting since 1981. Then comes a Nov. 22 trip to Lafayette, where former Quakers standout Mike Jordan is in his first season as head coach. Donahue was an assistant at Penn during Jordan’s Penn career.

The Quakers will host the first Cathedral Classic at the Palestra during Thanksgiving Weekend from Nov. 25-27. Penn, Colgate, Delaware and Hartford will play doubleheaders with 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. tip-offs from Nov. 25-27. Penn plays Hartford (Nov. 25), Colgate (Nov. 26) then finishes with Delaware (Nov. 27).

All three other squads have roots to Penn, the Palestra and/or Philadelphia basketball. Colgate head coach Matt Langel was a two-time Ivy League champion as a guard for Penn before returning as an assistant for the Quakers. Hartford head coach John Gallagher played at Cardinal O’Hara and then Saint Joseph’s and was an assistant at both Penn and La Salle. Finally, Delaware coach Martin Inglesby graduated Archbishop Carroll as the program’s all-time leading scorer.

The Quakers return home against Saint Joseph's on Nov. 30 to start a four-game stretch of Big 5 games. They host La Salle on Dec. 3, travel to Villanova on Dec. 7 and return home to face Temple on Dec. 10. Penn went 0-4 in Big 5 games last season.

Penn hosts Division III Wilkes University on Dec. 8 before beginning Ivy League play. They will finish their non-conference schedule Jan. 23 with another game against Hartford, two days after facing Yale in Connecticut.

Penn brings back its top four scorers from last season, including junior guard Jordan Dingle (20.9 ppg), the team’s leading scorer and a first team All-Ivy selection last season. Junior guard Clark Slajchert (10.7 ppg), junior guard/forward Max Martz (10 ppg) and senior guard Jonah Charles (6.7 ppg) make up the team’s other top returning scorers.

The return of sophomore guard George Smith (5.3 ppg) and senior forward Michael Moshkovitz (5.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg), senior guard Lucas Monroe (4.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and sophomore center/forward Nick Spinoso gives Penn eight of the top 10 members of last season’s rotation back.

The experienced group should be ready to start off on better footing this season after returning from a year off last year.
