The COVID omicron variant wrecked its way through college hoops the last month, with just about every team in the city losing at least one game, and some a couple more than that. But that still left plenty of hoops played between the men’s and women’s City 6 programs.

Our December honorees:

Women’s Player of the Month
Maddy Siegrist (Jr./Villanova)
This was not an easy call to make — Siegrist was one of three players who averaged greater than 23 points per game this month. But the Wildcats’ star forward was the only one who also brought the combination of a well-rounded stat line and team success, as the Wildcats (8-5, 2-2 Big East) went 4-0 with her on the court after losing their first two games of the month.

Siegrist’s line this month was impressive indeed: 27.8 ppg on 46.5% from the floor, scoring at least 23 points in each outing, topped off by a 36-point, 17-rebound effort against James Madison. She averaged exactly 10 boards in December, and shot 78% from the foul line. In seven games overall this season, including the Wildcats’ Jan. 2 win against St. John’s, Siegrist is averaging 22.9 ppg and 9.4 rpg, putting her in the top 10 in the country in scoring.

Honorable Mention
Tessa Brugler (Gr./Drexel)
Mia Davis (Gr./Temple)
Brianna Herlihy (Gr./Villanova)
Claire Jacobs (Jr./Villanova)
Katie Jekot (Gr./Saint Joseph’s)
Kayla Padilla (Jr./Penn)
Kayla Spruill (R-Jr./La Salle)
Keishana Washington (Sr./Drexel)

Women’s Rookie of the Month
Aniya Gourdine (Fr./Temple)
The Owls have had a number of youngsters step up and contribute early in the season. Last month, it was Gourdine, a 5-foot-9 guard out of Baltimore’s St. Frances Academy who stuffed the stat sheet, averaging 9.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 5.3 apg and 2.5 spg, shooting 54.2% from the floor, though Temple went just 1-3 on the month. Gourdine was steady in all four games, dishing at least four assists and grabbing at least three rebounds in each one, with her 10-point, seven-rebound, seven-assist, five-steal effort at Duquesne the best all-around effort.

Honorable Mention
Talya Brugler (Fr./Saint Joseph’s)
Laila Fair (Fr./Saint Joseph’s)
Jordan Obi (Soph./Penn)
Lucy Olsen (Fr./Villanova)

Men’s Player of the Month
Jordan Hall (Soph./Saint Joseph’s)
It was a good month for the Hawks, who went 4-2, including a pair of Big 5 wins (over Penn and Temple) and closed out the year with an eye-opening 83-56 rout at Richmond. Leading the way was Hall, who was a little up-and-down in November but turned in an undoubtedly impressive December.

The 6-8 wing out of Neumann-Goretti averaged a city-best 19.8 ppg in December, along with 6.7 rebounds and assists per game, while shooting 44.1% overall and 43.9% from the 3-point arc. His 33-point, seven-assist outing against Penn, in which he was 8-of-11 from deep, was undoubtedly the standout shooting night, but his 13-point, eight-rebound, eight-assist effort against the Spiders on Thursday evening was a huge reason Saint Joseph’s is 1-0 in Atlantic 10 play (7-5 overall).

Honorable Mention
James Butler (Gr./Drexel)
Jordan Dingle (Soph./Penn)
Damian Dunn (R-Fr./Temple)
Collin Gillespie (Gr./Villanova)
Clifton Moore (R-Jr./La Salle)
Ejike Obinna (Gr./Saint Joseph’s)

Men’s Rookie of the Month
Erik Reynolds II (Fr./Saint Joseph’s)
It was a clean sweep on the men’s side from the Hawks, as Reynolds continued his strong freshman campaign. The 6-2 point guard out of Bulls School (Md.), a starter in all 12 games, is coming off his best offensive outing yet, scoring 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting (3-6 3PT) against Richmond, a game which saw all five Hawks’ starters in double figures. That was his sixth double-digit showing; for the month, he averaged 9.3 ppg on 40% shooting, going exactly 10-of-25 from inside and out of the arc.

Honorable Mention
Khalil Brantley (Fr./La Salle)
Zach Hicks (Fr./Temple)
