Most of the nation’s top Division I programs will have current or soon-to-be players featured in this month’s USA Basketball U19 World Cup training camp: Duke. UCLA. Kentucky. Kansas.

And, thanks to Quinton Rose, Temple.

Rose, a rising sophomore at TU, is the first selection from the North Broad institution to try out for a national team squad since forward Lavoy Allen in 2007, just before the future Sixer and Pacer began his freshman year as an Owl.

He found out more than a month ago, though the camp invite list was only released next week. It’s a group stocked with top-10 recruiting prospects and future NBA talent -- not that Rose, a 6-foot-5 guard, isn’t highly skilled as well, but the four-star prospect out of Bishop Kearney (N.Y.) has never been involved with USA Basketball before.

"I wasn’t surprised," he said. "I just had a good freshman year and I feel like my hard work is paying off so it wasn’t really a surprise.

"I grew up watching the Olympics, guys like Kobe, LeBron, Carmelo. When I was younger, I used to watch them; [playing for USA Basketball is] something I’ve always wanted to do."

Rose was one of 28 initial selections for the tryout, which will culminate in the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championships in Cairo, Egypt from July 1-9. Training camp will be from June 18-25 in Colorado Springs, though the 12-member team will be decided on June 20.

The United States are the two-time defending champions at the U19 world championships, capturing titles in 2013 and 2015.

Also selected from the area was Westtown School rising senior Cameron Reddish, a 6-8 wing and the No. 4 prospect in the 2018 class, according to ESPN; Reddish’s Team Final teammate, Louis King (2018/Hudson Catholic, N.J.) is in there as well.

They’ll all be hoping to impress a coaching staff led by Kentucky head coach John Calipari, as well as Tad Boyle (Colorado) and Danny Manning (Wake Forest); several other coaches will assist at the camp, including Monmouth’s King Rice.

“Definitely looking forward to working with [Calipari],” Rose said. “He’s a legendary coach, sends guys to the NBA every year.”

Rose is one of 13 in the mix who already have college experience, including St. John’s Shamorie Ponds and Georgia Tech’s Josh Okogie, who like Rose in the American earned All-Freshman mentions in the Big East and ACC, respectively.

He’s hoping that year up will provide him an advantage, as some of the younger invitees are amongst the most talented young ballplayers not just in the country but around the globe.

“Playing a significant amount of college minutes, I think that makes a huge difference compared to the guys coming from high school,” he said. “The college game is played at a much different pace in speed and physicality.

“I’m confident I can do well against these guys,” he added. “I’m confident in my abilities, it’s just me going out there and having confidence in playing how I play and doing what I do.”

Seven of the selections have played for USA Basketball before: Hamidou Diallo (Kentucky), Kevin Huerter (Maryland), P.J. Washington (Kentucky) and Trae Young (Oklahoma) were all on the 2016 U18 championship team, while three others (Kevin Knox, Immanuel Quickly and Austin Wiley) were on the 2016 U17 World Championship gold-medal winners. Beyond that, quite a few others have been to training camps, including Reddish, a member of last year’s U17 World Championship camp, though an injury late in training cost him a selection to the squad.

Hueter and Rose were teammates together with the Albany City Rocks on the Nike EYBL circuit, but Rose said they two haven’t spoken yet about the national team opportunity.

As a freshman at Temple, Rose averaged 9.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg and 1.8 apg, shooting 43.3 percent overall and 30.0 percent from 3-point range. He scored in double figures 17 times, including a 26-point outburst during one of the Owls’ biggest victories of the year, over No. 25 Florida State at the Barclays Center in November.

Temple head coach Fran Dunphy returns his top two scorers from this year in rising junior Shizz Alston Jr. (13.9 ppg, 4.1 apg) and rising senior Obi Enechionyia (13.1 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and four of his top five overall. They’ll also get Josh Brown back as a redshirt senior after the point guard missed all but five games last year due to a torn Achilles; he averaged 8.3 ppg, 4.9 apg and 4.8 rpg as a full-time starter in 2015-16.

Rose will be counted on to take a sizeable step forward in production during his sophomore year as Temple tries to improve upon a year where it went 16-16 overall, including a 7-11 mark in American Athletic Conference play. Having a chance to wear that USA Basketball uniform, even if only for a training camp, can only help.

“[Dunphy] told me to make the most out of the opportunity, work hard leading up to it, go up there do what I do,” Rose said. “Just have fun with it and make the most out of the opportunity.”
