Saint Joseph’s dropped its ninth straight game on senior night at Hagan Arena, falling 68-49 to Rhode Island.

At First…

The Hawks were put in an early hole, conceding an 8-0 Rhode Island run four minutes in which gave the Rams a 17-5 advantage. Charlie Brown did his best to hold St. Joe’s together early on, leading all scorers with seven points by halftime, but Phil Martelli’s side struggled to protect the ball, turning it over nine times within the opening period to allow Rhode Island a 36-20 lead heading into the break.

Turning Point…

The closest St. Joe’s got in the second half was within 13 points, as Rhode Island continued extending its lead, which reached 20 at the 13-minute mark. E.C. Matthews and Hassan Martin headed the Rams’ efforts down the stretch to close out the game, not letting up until the win was secured.

Standout Stars…

Matthews scored 13 points to lead the Rams in the win. The 6-foot-5 junior from Detroit, Mich. has led Rhode Island in scoring on ten occasions this year.

The freshman Brown led the Hawks with 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field in the loss. The three-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week also made his 66th 3-pointer of the season, setting a new school record for most 3s made by a freshman.

Noteworthy Numbers…

167: total combined games played by Brendan Casper and Javon Baumann for St. Joe’s over the past four years. The duo helped the Hawks win the A-10 championship in both 2014 and 2016. Senior night on Wednesday marked the last home game for the two at Hagan Arena

2-for-9: St. Joe’s shooting from behind the arc. Over the course of the season, the Hawks have been outscored from the 3-point line 807-489, shooting 32.4 percent from deep.

13: turnovers committed by St. Joe’s. The Hawks have been playing without a true point guard following an injury to sophomore tri-captain Lamarr Kimble on February 11. Over the previous five games without Kimble, the Hawks have given up the ball an average of 13.2 times per game.
