A solid day from a pair of Philadelphia natives lifted visiting Towson to a 69-65 win over host Drexel at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

At First…

The first 35 minutes of the game generally played out like an accordion in Towson’s favor. Though Drexel held a five-point lead midway through the first half, a 9-0 run swung it in the Tigers’ favor, and it was a five-point gap at the half. To begin the second, Drexel fell behind by seven before battling back to tie it up, then saw itself go down by as many as 11 with 9:06 to play after eight straight points by Towson’s Jordan McNeil before once again battling all the way back to tie it at 59 with 4:03 remaining.

Turning Point…

Philadelphia native John Davis came up with two consecutive difference-making plays down the stretch. First the Neumann-Goretti product put Towson up 63-62 on a lefty bank shot with 2:19 remaining, then came up with a big-time stuff of Drexel’s Rodney Williams with the shot clock ticking down as the Dragons looked for a response. He also had a big-time assist, finding Mike Morsell with a layup to extend the lead to four with 40 seconds to play.

Drexel got it back to a two-point game after a late Towson turnover before Tigers' big man William Adala Moto sealed it on two foul shots with eight seconds remaining.

Standout Stars…

After a quiet first half, Drexel freshman Kurk Lee Jr. awoke in the second, pouring in 15 of his game-high 18 in the second half. The 5-9 guard was 6-for-16 from the floor and added in five assists against one turnover.

Davis had his typically solid game inside for Towson. The 6-5 forward with an endless motor powered his way to 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the year and third in four games.

Noteworthy Number(s)...

37: Towson had an extremely productive game from its reserves, who outscored Drexel’s 37-4 on the afternoon. That was spurred along by Davis and another Neumann-Goretti product, Zane Martin, who chipped in nine points off the bench.

10: Towson dominated Drexel inside, winning the rebound battle 41-31 and outscoring the Dragons 40-32 in the paint. Sophomore Alex Thomas (6-9) grabbed 14 rebounds to pace the Tigers, adding in eight points as well.
