Everything went right for Drexel on Thursday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, as the Dragons used a hot start to smoke William & Mary by a score of 79-61.

At First…

Drexel came out of the gates on fire, scoring 11 unanswered straight from tipoff and getting out to a 30-8 lead with 10:21 still to play in the first half. Icelandic sharpshooter Kari Jonsson knocked down three of his first four three-point attempts to account for 11 of the Dragons’ first 16 points and finished the half with 16 points. But William & Mary countered with a 14-3 run beginning at that 10:21 mark, and by halftime, the deficit was down to just 10, Drexel leading 45-35.

Turning Point…

Kurk Lee racked up nine of Drexel’s first 13 points coming out of the break and the Dragons mounted a 9-1 run to bring the lead back up to 19 with 11:27 remaining. The lead never dipped below 16 from that point on, reaching a height of 24 points. By the end of garbage time, the final was a 79-61 victory for Zach Spiker and company.

Standout Stars…

Jonsson blazed the trail for Drexel with his three-point shooting, draining six attempts from long range en route to a game-high 23 points. From the point guard slot, Lee put in a solid performance of 13 points, five assists, and four rebounds for the Dragons. Rodney Williams and Austin Williams each scored ten and combined for 15 rebounds, and Sammy Mojica added 12 points and six assists.

Omar Prewitt scored 17 points, Jack Whitman had 14, and Daniel Dixon and Nathan Knight each added 10 for William & Mary.

Noteworthy Numbers…

0: After Drexel’s commanding start, William & Mary was never able to claw back into the game, and failed to hold a single lead for the entire 40 minutes.

67: Holding control of the rebounding and turnover departments, the Dragons managed to hoist up 67 shots against the Tribe, making 31 for a 46 percent clip on the night.
