Penn State collected one of its biggest wins of the season Tuesday night, when the Nittany Lions knocked off No. 21 Maryland 70-64 at the Bryce Jordan Center.

At First…
Looking to rebound from their disappointing loss to Rutgers over the weekend, Penn State came out playing much crisper basketball and led 14-11 at the under-12 timeout. Lamar Stevens got things started with a jumper just outside the lane and followed that up with a nice lay-in off the glass to get the Nittany Lions in a much better groove offensively early on.

Turning Point…
Following a solid 20 minutes, Penn State didn’t take its foot off the gas to open the second half. Going on a 9-1 run to take a 44-31 lead at the 14:26 mark, which prompted Terrapins coach Mark Turgeon to call a timeout. The scoring spurt to open the second half was led by Stevens, who hit a free throw before knocking down a jumper and slamming home a wide open dunk off of an in-bounds pass. A Tony Carr runner pushed the Nittany Lions’ lead to 13 and Turgeon decided to halt play with the timeout. Maryland would close the gap to four with 3:26 to go, but the Nittany Lions held off the late rally to escape with the upset win.

Standout Stars…
Former Roman Catholic teammates, Carr and Stevens, had two of their better games since arriving at Penn State, and they picked the perfect time to do so against a Top-25 opponent. Stevens, who scored the first seven points for Penn State to open the second half, finished with 25 points to go along with seven rebounds. Carr added 14 points, while leading his team with three assists.

Noteworthy Numbers…
26: Penn State sank 26 free throws, a welcome sign for coach Pat Chambers, who has seen his team struggle from the free throw line in recent games. The Terrapins, on the other hand, struggled from the charity stripe, hitting just 17-of-27.

2: The Nittany Lions have had their fair share of struggles in an up and down season so far. But Tuesday night’s win gives Penn State its second win over a Top-25 opponent this season. The Nittany Lions also took down then-No. 24 Minnesota 52-50 on Jan. 14.
