Lamarr Kimble drilled a game-winning jumper with 15 seconds remaining to give St. Joe's a 73-72 victory over La Salle at Hagan Arena on Saturday night.

At First…

The Hawks were led early on by former Saint Joseph’s Prep standout Chris Clover, who passed his career high in scoring before half of the first period had been played. La Salle also got into foul trouble quickly, allowing St. Joe’s to start shooting one-and-ones by the 9-minute mark. St. Joe’s took advantage and jumped ahead 27-18 with just under eight minutes to play. La Salle bounced back and cut the SJU lead to four with just over five minutes remaining, but that is the closest the Explorers would get in the first frame. Clover’s strong first half, 16 points on 6-of-7 from the field, propelled SJU to take a 37-29 lead into the break.

The Explorers climbed back into the game by starting the second half with an 11-5 run, making it a one-possession game, three and a half minutes into the final period. Tony Washington gave La Salle the lead 50-49 from the free throw line with 12 minutes remaining.

Turning Point…

After La Salle took the lead, the two squads remained neck-and-neck for the next eight minutes, with La Salle holding a slight lead until two free throws from Charlie Brown put SJU back ahead by a score of 70-69 with 4:33 to play. After more than a minute of scoreless basketball, a Demetrius Henry free throw tied things up at 70 with just under three minutes to play. An elbow jumper from Lamarr Kimble with 15 seconds put SJU ahead for good as La Salle could not answer on the other end as the buzzer sounded.

Standout Stars…

La Salle was led from start to finish by the trio of Jordan Price, Amar Stukes and B.J. Johnson. The three combined for 51 points, with Johnson also leading La Salle in rebounds with seven and Stukes pacing the assist column with five dimes.

Clover built on his strong first half and finished the game with a new-career high of 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while also adding in five assists and a steal. Helping Clover carry the scoring load for St. Joe’s was Charlie Brown, who chipped in 15 points.

Noteworthy Numbers…

39.6%: The Hawks’ stout defense held La Salle to 21-of-53 (.396) from the field on Saturday, the Explorers’ third worst performance of the season.

45: This game was far from mistake-free, as the two squads combined for a total of 45 fouls in the contest, La Salle committing 23 while St. Joe’s contributed the remaining 22.
