The UNC Wilmington Seahawks used a dominant second half to complete a season sweep of Drexel and stay perfect in CAA play, defeating the Dragons at home by a final of 87-74 Saturday afternoon.

At First...
Drexel went blow for blow with UNCW in the first half – a major improvement from the 18-2 start the Dragons suffered when they last met the Seahawks. A layup by Miles Overton eight minutes in gave Drexel its biggest lead of the first half, 16-12 at the 12:18 mark, before UNCW quickly regained the advantage with a 5-0 spurt.

By the 6:47 mark, the Seahawks had opened up a 30-23 lead, the half’s largest, on a three-point by Jaylen Fornes, but Drexel closed the half strong to enter the break within a possession, 43-40.

Turning Point…
UNCW got things going out of the gates in the second half to open up a quick 51-44 lead, but five consecutive points in response from freshman Kurk Lee made sure that didn’t last long, and the Dragons continued to hang with the class of their conference early in the second.

That changed drastically over the minutes that followed, as the Seahawks began to open up a commanding double-digit advantage. By the time the final eight minutes rolled around, a triple by Denzel Williams had UNCW up 68-55, a score much more indicative of on-paper expectations. From there, the home team ran away for a convincing victory.

Standout Stars…
The Dragons had a very balanced scoring effort with three players in double digits, and were led by Sammy Mojica and Rodney Williams. Leading the way for Drexel was Mojica with 15 points and five rebounds while Williams had 14 and 10.

As for UNCW, the leading scorer among five who finished in double digits was Chris Flemmings, who finished with a game-high 17 despite going 2-of-9 from beyond the arc.

Noteworthy Numbers…
22: While Drexel and UNCW weren’t heavily separated in many categories other than the final score, the Seahawks outscored the Dragons 22-8 on second-chance points, raking in 20 offensive boards compared to Drexel’s 9.

33: Although the lead changed hands six times – all in the first half – UNCW led for 33 of the game’s 40 minutes; Drexel led for just four.
