The Saint Joseph’s Hawks fell just short on Tuesday night at Hagan Arena, falling 75-67 to conference rivals George Mason in a tight contest.

At First…
George Mason started with greater energy than the Hawks, going up 13-7 early on, but seven unanswered from St. Joe’s erased the advantage. The remainder of the first half was dead even, and the home side went to the locker room with a 32-31 lead at the break.

Turning Point…
After much of the same for the first five minutes of the second half, George Mason broke open a Marquise Moore-led 8-2 run to take a slight advantage. St. Joe’s crawled back with five straight points of its own, and as the Patriots took multiple other two-possession leads, the Hawks were right there to close the gap back up. Phil Martelli’s men finally took back the lead with a James Demery and-one at the 2:50 mark, each team then reclaiming the lead with a two-point bucket. Otis Livingston II knocked in a corner three to put the Patriots up two, 65-63. Moore converted four key free throws to extend the lead to six with 42.8 to go, but it looked as though St. Joe’s still had a chance after Lamarr Kimble drove for two and drew a foul. Kimble’s missed the shot from the stripe and teammate Nick Robinson grabbed the offensive board, but Robinson proceeded to throw a lobbed pass out to the top of the key which was picked off by Livingston, who drew a foul on the other end. Livingston and Moore converted key free throws down the stretch to secure an eight-point win for the Patriots.

Standout Stars…
Moore led George Mason with 24 points and 10 rebounds, giving him his tenth double-double of the season and making him the 34th 1,000-point scorer in school history. Jaire Grayer added 11 and Livingston and Karmari Newman each had 10 for the Patriots.

For St. Joe’s, Lamarr Kimble and Charlie Brown led the way, posting 18 and 17 points, respectively. James Demery contributed 16 and Brendan Casper scored 10.

Noteworthy Numbers…
14: It was quite the close game; the teams exchanged blows for the full sixty minutes, with the lead changing 14 times on the night.

60.9: Turning the offense up a notch coming out of halftime, George Mason shot 14-23 (.609) in the second half, just outpacing the relentless Hawks.
