In a sloppy game from both squads, Villanova worked their way to a 63-47 win over the Cougars of the College of Charleston at the Pavillion on Wednesday night.

At First…
For the first time of the 2016-17 season, Villanova senior forward Kris Jenkins wasn’t in the starting lineup for the Wildcats and it showed as they got out to a slow start, falling behind 5-2 in the early going.

Villanova then unleashed a 20-4 run that lasted just over 9 minutes that saw them take a 22-9 lead with just over 8 minutes to go in the half. It looked as if this would put College of Charleston away but the Cougars hung around and were outscored by only one for the remainder of the half. Led by Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins, who scored nine and eight, respectively, Villanova took a 35-21 lead into the intermission. The Cougars came out of the locker room and scored the first four points of the second half, cutting the Wildcats’ lead to just 35-25.

Turning Point…
Immediately after the Cougars’ early second half spurt, Jalen Brunson responded with a nifty and-one. Immediately thereafter--at the 16:56 mark--Jay Wright inserted a lineup devoid of a traditional point guard or center. Hart, Jenkins, and fellow wings Mikal Bridges, Eric Paschall, and Donte DiVincenzo immediately ripped off a 7-0 run of their own in just under two minutes of game time, and before the capacity crowd in The Pavilion knew it, the Wildcats were up 20.

The defending national champs never quite stepped on the Cougars’ throats--they had a nine-plus minute field goal drought in the latter part of the half--but the final result was never in doubt, with Villanova maintaining a lead of around 20 points for the rest of the contest.

Standout Stars…
Villanova senior guard Josh Hart led the charge on both ends for the victorious Wildcats as he finished with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Also coming up big for Villanova were redshirt sophomores Eric Paschall and Mikal Bridges, who finished with eight points and five rebounds each.

For the College of Charleston, it was sophomore forward Jerrell Brantley who caused havoc for the Villanova defense as he cashed in for 18 points and added seven rebounds.

Noteworthy Numbers…
9:06
-- Despite the easy victory, the Wildcats’ went over nine minutes in the second half without making a field goal. They were able to maintain their lead by getting to the free throw line consistently, but at one point went nearly three minutes without scoring at all.

25 -- The win marked Villanova’s 25th consecutive win in the month of November, spanning across the last four seasons. The Wildcats’ last November loss came on November 25, 2012, when they lost an overtime tilt to La Salle.
