NEWARK, Del. – During the first drill of Delaware’s fall workouts last week, Eric Carter went to make a move he had worked on during a strong summer.

But as he pushed off his left leg, he felt his knee buckle and something pop. Carter would find out in the first hour of the Blue Hens’ initial workout of the season that he had a left torn ACL and would be out for the 2015-16 campaign.

“It was a freak accident,” Delaware coach Monte Ross said.

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound sophomore forward, who averaged 9.5 minutes, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 points in 23 games last season, will have surgery in mid-October.

“Some guys, you have concern about their rehab. But he’ll attack his rehab the way he’s attacked everything,” Ross added. “And that’s passionately with a lot of fervor and making sure he gets better. I have no worries that he’ll come out of this bigger, better and stronger.”

Carter was poised to make more of an impact in his second collegiate season, especially after an offseason which received praise from Ross, who said “you could tell he put in the time when he was by himself.”

The good news for Ross and staff is that they do have plenty of frontcourt depth. Senior Marvin King-Davis and redshirt junior Maurice Jeffers are the likely starters, but another junior (Barnett Harris) and a sophomore (Skye Johnson) are also both over 6-8 and can provide minutes off the bench when the Blue Hens go with a bigger lineup.

With his left knee heavily wrapped, Carter was on the sideline at Delaware’s workout Tuesday. The Jackson, N.J. native was able to yell encouragement from the sidelines and crack a few jokes during and after the workout.

“It’s an unfortunate event. It was a scary thing,” Carter said. “I was down, but my team helped me look at the positive and have a good outlook on it.”

Carter will be limited to the sidelines, training room and weight room for the foreseeable future, but he knows he will have three more seasons left at Delaware. He’s keeping an optimistic outlook for his season off the court and his teammates’ on it.

“We’re going to win the CAA this year,” Carter said. “And I’m going to come back and win it with my guys a couple more times.”
