Math, Civics & Sciences (Pa.) senior guard Samir Doughty has been offered by Virginia Commonwealth and is visiting the Atlantic 10 school with "a plan to commit" on Tuesday, a source told CoBL.

One of the top scorers in Philadelphia over the last two seasons, Doughty was originally committed to St. John's, but de-committed and was released from his scholarship shortly after new head coach Chris Mullin was hired in late April.

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard finished his prep career with 1,766 points, putting him in the top 20 scorers in Philadelphia high school history, according to former longtime Daily News writer and basketball historian Ted Silary. As a senior, he averaged 24.5 ppg for the Mighty Elephants, though his team managed only a 14-14 record, including a 2-8 mark in the Public League.

Capable of scoring from all three levels, Doughty is a volume scorer who's at his best with the ball in his hands, where he can create his own shot even against top-level defenders. He's also a very good 3-point shooter when he gets his feet set, but his bread-and-butter is getting to the rim and scoring through contact.

VCU's operating under new management, with former head coach Shaka Smart departing for Texas in April after six years at the helm of the Rams, in which he took the program to five NCAA tournaments, including the 2011 Final Four.

New head coach Will Wade and staff have one current commitment for 2015, Lee High School (Ala.)'s Gerron Scissum, a 6-7 wing.
