Tommy Funk heard from Army for the first time on Wednesday night. On Thursday, the Patriot League school became the first to offer him a scholarship.

Black Knights head coach Zach Spiker extended the offer to Funk after speaking to the Archbishop Wood 2016 point guard, who plays for the Jersey Shore Warriors on the AAU circuit.

"I was very excited," he said. "I didn't really expect it, and I just really was grateful that they took a chance on me and were the first school to offer, and hopefully this leads to more and this will open up my recruiting because I know I've still got a lot of work to do."

Funk, who stands six feet tall and weighs 165 lbs., has been a starter at Wood for the last two years, which have also been the first two for head coach John Mosco.

He's been a key part of what Mosco has built at the school these last two seasons; the Vikings went 18-6 this last year, including an 8-5 record in Catholic League play, despite (until now) not having a single player on the roster with a Division I offer in a league full of future high-major talent.

"I'm proud of him, he's worked his butt off," Mosco said via text. "He is a tremendous leader and hard worker. I think he is primed to have a great spring and summer."

Obviously, a commitment to Army means more than just four years of basketball at the United States Military Academy; upon graduation, Funk would become an active-duty member of the military with a five-year commitment.

First, though, will be a visit to West Point, N.Y. to see what the school, program and military have to offer.

"I know it's a big commitment, and that's why i want to take a good, hard look," he said. "I understand it's not something you can just jump into, so when I go up there, I'm really going to have to make a decision with myself and my parents and see if that's something that I want to do."
