Strengths: True point guard who’s also a knockdown shooter from the perimeter. Can spot up and shoot off the dribble. Handles the ball well and doesn’t try to do anything extra or too fancy. Instead, he uses an effective dribble crossover to get from one spot of the floor to another, to the rim, or set up teammates for scores. Also, keeps his dribble low, attacks the basket strong and finishes nicely. Does a good job of penetrating and drawing defenders into the lane before dishing out to teammates spotting up on the 3-point line. Quick first step and makes good entry passes to the post. Uses his wide upper body effectively when shielding defenders off him while driving. Confidently steps into his shot and has a smooth release.
Weaknesses: Needs to continue to work on quickening his release on his shot. Needs to work on athleticism and quickness, because right now he's susceptible to being beaten off the dribble on the defensive end.
Overall: It looks as if the rising sophomore will be manning the point for St. Joe’s Prep at the start of next season. A true point guard, Thompson is learning and developing the right skills that will make him an extension of head coach Speedy Morris on the court. While not a high-flyer, he’s a strong guard who uses his tight handle to get him anywhere he wants on the court. When he’s not hitting 3-pointers, he spends time getting his teammates involved and causes defenses fits with his penetration ability.
