Strengths: High-level athlete who excels in transition, running the right lanes to the bucket, where he can finish with both hands around the rim. Has very good body control when he’s in midair, and will hang through contact to get his shot off. Has a good nose for the basketball when it’s coming off the rim, and will wind up with a good deal of second-chance points.
Weaknesses: Needs to develop his skill set, starting with a more consistent jump shot. He’s used to relying on his athleticism to get by, which won’t work as he takes a step up in level of competition on the AAU circuit as well as in high school. Needs to continue to develop his handle and ability to attack the basket from the perimeter as well as understand when to pass out of tough situations.
Overall: Certainly an intriguing prospect, Thomas has a sure-fire Division I body and athleticism, but still needs to develop his basketball skills before he’s playing like a D-I prospect on a consistent basis. Could develop into a mid-to-high-major wing by the time he’s ready for college, but there’s work to be done.
